RICHMOND, Va. - Senior Megan Thompson scored two goals, including the game winner in double overtime to give the Richmond field hockey team a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over city-rival VCU on Tuesday night at Cary Street Field.
Richmond, which out-shot VCU 27-9 for the match, bombarded the goal with shots in the second half, but found itself trailing in the final seven minutes 2-0.
The Spiders finally got on the scoreboard when Thompson deflected a shot from junior Hannah Hess into the back of the net to cut the gap to 2-1 with 6:18 to play.
Then with 2:05 remaining Hess scored from the top of the circle on an assist from Dani Pycroft to tie the game.
The two teams went to overtime for the second-straight year, and after playing through the first 15-minute OT and most of the second overtime, Richmond got another breakaway and Thompson was able to beat the goalkeeper and find the back of the cage while falling hard to the turf to give the Spiders their fifth win in the last six games.
With the two goals, Thompson tied senior teammate Sarah Blythe-Wood for eighth on Richmond's all-time list with 30 career goals. Thompson also passed Blythe-Wood on Richmond's all-time scoring list with 77 career points. Blythe-Wood is ninth with 75 points.
Richmond out-shot VCU 9-4 in the first half, but trailed 1-0 and then out-shot the Rams 10-1 in the second half, but with less than seven minutes left the Spiders were down two goals.
That's when Thompson and Hess scored a little over four minutes apart to tie the game.
Richmond kept the momentum in the Rams' end of the field in the first overtime, out-shooting VCU 6-2, but it was not until the second OT that the Spiders could finish the Rams off.
The Atlantic 10-leading Spiders (9-7, 3-0 Atlantic 10) return to conference play on Friday at Massachusetts at 3 p.m.
