Swimming Crushes Field At Thomas Murphy Invitational

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Richmond swimming team swept the top-three spots in four different events Saturday and cruised to a sweep of St. Francis, Loyola and Johns Hopkins as the Thomas Murphy Invitational concluded Saturday at Loyola. Freshman Lauren Hines picked up wins in four more events for the Spiders.
Hines won the 100 back, the 200 back and was part of the winning 200 free and 200 medley relays as Richmond beat Loyola 240-123, downed St. Francis 232-95 and rolled past Johns Hopkins 239-92.
Thanks to a time of 57.23 in the 100 back, Hines led four Spiders in the top four spots. Sophomore Alex Helland was third (59.16) and sophomore Jill Smaniotto was fourth (1:00.50).
Hines also triggered a top-three sweep in the 200 back as she led the way with her 1:04.81, followed by Helland (2:08.13) and LePere (2:08.66).
Another podium sweep for Richmond came in the 200 free with junior Natalie Lewis taking the gold in 1:56.46. Sophomore Liz Cohan was second (1:56.74) and sophomore Charlotte Brackett was third (1:57.88).
Brackett led three Spiders in top three spots in the 100 free with her time of 53.09. Sieben was second in 53.19 and sophomore Liz Cohan was third in 53.87.
Sieben swam on three winning relays Saturday and also grabbed the win in the 100 fly in a time of 56.11.
The 200 free relay (1:37.28) also included Brackett, LePere and Hinen. Sieben joined Helland, Cohan and Lewis in winning the 400 free relay (3:38.13). The winning 200 medley relay (1:45.56) included Hines, sophomore Mary Anne Lerro, Sieben and Brackett.
Other Richmond wins Saturday included Lerro taking the 100 breast (1:07.46), Kuska winning the 1,650 free (17:45.45) and Smaniotto grabbing the 200 fly (2:10.42).
The Spiders return to action Nov. 19-21 at the Terrapin Cup.
