ARLINGTON, Va. - Freshman Robby Massar drove in the go-ahead run when he was hit by a pitch in the 11th inning and junior Cameron Brown homered twice in the game as the Richmond baseball team won at George Washington, 9-6, Friday afternoon in their Atlantic 10 series opener in Arlington, Va.
Brown finished the day three-for-four with three RBI and now has a team leading six home runs for the Spiders, who improved to 13-5 overall and 3-1 in Atlantic 10 play. Sophomore Mike Mergenthaler and senior Ryan Metzroth also homered in the victory.
Richmond tacked on two additional insurance runs in the 11th thanks to sophomore Andrew Lowry's two-RBI single through the right side. Junior Jared Bard finished off GW in the bottom of the 11th as the Spiders won for the fourth time this season in extra innings (4-0). Four of Richmond's last five games have been decided in extras.
Freshman Chris Cowell stole home to put the Spiders on the board in the second inning and back-to-back home runs by Brown and Mergenthaler in the third gave junior starting pitcher Stephen Owens a 4-0 lead.
But GW answered right back in the bottom of third with three runs, only to see the solo shots by Brown in the fifth and Metzroth in the sixth give Richmond its three-run margin back.
Owens fanned six in six innings of work, but watch his three-run lead fizzle when Sean Rockey launched a two-out, three-run homer off senior reliever Josh Horn in the seventh inning.
Senior closer Brian Alas held the Colonials at bay in the eight, ninth and 10th and picked up his second-consecutive victory in identical fashion. He fired a shutout over those three frames and allowing just one hit with three strikeouts. Alas is now 2-0 in 2009, along with his team-leading four saves.
Alas also on the winning end of the Spiders' 11-inning victory at VMI Tuesday night.
Richmond and George Washington continue their three-game set Saturday at 1 p.m.
