UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond had 2-0 lead in the final five minutes of the first half, but Indiana scored before the break and added two more goals in a span of44 seconds in the second half for a 3-2 comeback win Sunday at Crenshaw Field.
The Spiders were in control of the game after senior Sarah Blythe-Wood scored her second goal of the game on a penalty stroke with 4:52 left in the first half, but Richmond was unable to get to intermission with the two-goal lead intact. Indiana's Meg O'Connel scored on a penalty corner with three seconds left in the half to cut the gap and swing the momentum toward the Hoosiers.
"When they got the goal at the end of the first half it definitely was a momentum changer," Richmond head coach Gina Lucido said. "We're still looking to find the ability to put teams away and recognize that flow of play that we had is something we have to capitalize on. Indiana found an opening and they just kept going after it."
O'Connel struck again to tie the game with 23:24 remaining in the match and less than a minute later Brooke Bomeman scored the game-winner for the Hoosiers (2-0).
Indiana held just a 14-13 advantage in shots against the Spiders. In two games this weekend, the Hoosiers were out-shot 33-24, but finished 2-0 including a 2-1 victory over No. 14 American.
Blythe-Wood opened the scoring Saturday when she came up with the ball in the circle and blasted a shot into the back of the cage for the 16th goal of her career.
Richmond dropped to 0-2 to start the season, including a 2-1 loss to No. 14 American. Lucido and the players were pleased with the improvement the Spiders showed Sunday against Indiana.
"In the first half it took a little while to get into our grove, but when we got into the grove that was some of the best hockey we played," Blythe-Wood said.
The Spiders open a four-game road swing next Saturday at Columbia at 1 p.m.
