WASHINGTON, D.C. - Freshman Christina Amorose scored a goal that had the Spiders tied with No. 15 ranked American with 15 minutes remaining Friday, but the Eagles scored four unanswered goals in the those final 15 minutes to win the season opener for both teams.
Three of American's second-half goals came on penalty corners.
American, ranked No. 15 in the NFHCA Preseason Top-20 Poll, scored just 2:07 into the game, but Amorose answered with her first collegiate goal in her first collegiate game on an assist from Katelin Peterson 7:56 into the game.
That is how the score remained until Gina Hofmann scored with 14:13 remaining in the game on a penalty corner. In a span of less than five minutes, American converted three penalty corners for goals and then tacked on another goal on a deflection in the final minute of play.
"We had good patches of play today, but early on its good to know that they a lot of details that you've got to fix and take care of," Richmond head coach Gina Lucido said. "That is something that as a team and as a staff I think we knew we were going to face figuring out our new personality. The commitment, the mission is we are relentless in pursing another championship."
Richmond has a quick turnaround, playing Towson at the University of Maryland on Saturday at 1 p.m.
"We are going to make this definitely significant loss to American work for good and make sure this does not happen again this season," Lucido said.
