SHORT HOPS
Winners of 14 of its last 17 games, Richmond heads to Dayton for a key Atlantic 10 series. The Spiders are in second place in the A-10 at 5-1, while the Flyers sit a game back.
The series opens Friday at Time Warner Cable Stadium at 3 p.m., continues Saturday at 1 p.m. and concludes Sunday at noon. Gametracker is available for all three games, as is live audio from DaytonFlyers.com.
Richmond's 5-1 start to A-10 play is the team's best since starting the 2007 campaign 5-1. The Spiders have also won back-to-back conference series for the first time since that same season. Richmond's last trip to the A-10 Tournament came in 2007.
Senior RF Mike Mergenthaler is closing in on the career top-10s in a number of categories at Richmond: 221 hits (needs 12 more to crack the career top 10), 43 doubles (needs 6 more), 28 home runs (needs 3 more) and 145 RBI (needs 5 more).
After breaking a bone in leg in the fall, senior Billy Barber was welcomed back to the roster at just the right time. Barber launched a two-run homer and got the save in Richmond's 6-3 win over VCU Tuesday. Barber is hitting .340 (16-for-47) with two doubles, two homers and nine RBI in 14 games this season.
Richmond throws a pair of southpaws at the Flyers to open the series, with sophomore Bret Williams (5-0, 3.10 ERA) going Friday followed by freshman Chris Bates (1-1, 3.89) Saturday. The duo has been sharp in A-10 play, with Williams posting a 2-0 record and a 0.55 ERA, while Bates owns a 1.50 ERA and no decisions in both of his starts. They are ranked fourth and ninth, respectively, in the A-10 in ERA during conference play.
The Spiders enter the weekend ranked fifth in the A-10 in hitting (.288), third in pitching (3.78) and third in defense (.964).
