Cafanga's Gem Allows Spiders To Even SJU Series

CAMDEN, N.J. - Richmond jumped on Saint Joseph's with five runs in the first three innings, tacked on two more in the ninth and even the A-10 series with a 7-2 victory Saturday in game that began Friday afternoon and was halted by rain.
The game was stopped entering the bottom of the eighth inning with Richmond leading 5-2. Richmond improved to 26-24-2 overall, 13-10 in the A-10, while SJU slipped to 20-31, 10-13.
Senior Anthony Cafagna allowed just one run and five hits in a dominant start for the Spiders, and looked on as sophomore Jacob Mayers recorded the game's final nine outs -- three Friday before the rain and the final six Saturday morning - to nail down his first college save.
Junior Phil Ruzbarsky had three more hits and his two-RBI single gave the Spiders a 3-0 lead in the second inning and his RBI triple in the ninth-inning made it 6-2. Ruzbarsky eventually scored from third on a wild pitch for Richmond's seventh run.
Billy Barber and Mayers added RBIs for Richmond in third as the lead grew to 5-0. Eddie Palmer's sac fly got the Hawks on the board in the sixth inning, and Mike Coleman's RBI double made it 5-2 in the seventh.
Ruzbarsky finished three-for-five with three RBI and a run, while Adam Forrer's RBI groundout got the Spiders' three-run second-inning rally started.
Cafagna was credited with the win (7-3) and SJU starter Chad Simindinger was tagged for eight hits and five runs in 6.1 innings and was hung the loss (3-7).
