SHORT HOPS
Richmond is through in the winner's bracket of the 2011 A-10 Championship thanks to a thrilling 5-4 victory over Xavier Wednesday in a first-round game at Campbell's Field. The fifth-seeded Spiders face top-seeded Charlotte Thursday at 12 p.m.
The winner of the Richmond-Charlotte game advances to the Semifinals Friday at 12 p.m., while the loser plays either Thursday at 7 p.m. or Friday at 3:30 p.m. (based on seeds) in the double-elimination format.
Richmond is now 14-9 all-time in A-10 Tournament play -- the 14 wins is the most among active teams in the A-10 and the .609 winning percentage is second-highest behind Saint Louis (.889, 8-1). Charlotte is 9-6 all-time in the tournament (.600).
Richmond played the toughest league schedule of any other A-10 team this season, as the W-L record of its league foes was 98-70 in the regular season. The Spiders have at least one win this season versus all five teams in the tournament -- going 7-8 in those games -- and also playing 9th-place Saint Joseph's and 10th-place St. Louis.
Senior RF Mike Mergenthaler, who has missed just three games in his college career that spans 203 games, currently leads the team in doubles (16), homers (7) and RBI (43), while his 164 career RBI ranks in the Top 30 among all active Division-I players and ranks tied for third all-time at Richmond.
Senior 1B Billy Barber has turned up the offense in A-10 play as he led the team with a .354 average in conference action and brings an eight-game hitting streak into Thursday's game versus Charlotte. Four of his five homers have come in A-10 play and the senior currently ranks sixth on the Spiders all-time homers list with 36.
Sophomore LHP Bret Williams gets the call Thursday, having fired a three-hit shutout over seven innings to beat No. 25 Charlotte, 3-0, on May 6. Williams is 7-2 with a 3.49 ERA.
