SHORT HOPS
• For the first time since winning the Atlantic 10 Championship in 2003, the Richmond baseball team has a chance to play for the conference title. The fifth-seeded Spiders play top-seeded Charlotte on Championship Saturday, needing to beat the 49ers twice to claim the crown.
• Richmond clubbed No. 3 Dayton, 10-3, Friday afternoon to stave off elimination then rolled over No. 2 Rhode Island, 7-2, last night to win the losers' bracket and advance for the right face Charlotte.
• Richmond is now 16-10 all-time in A-10 Tournament play -- the 16 wins is the most among active teams in the A-10 and the .615 winning percentage is third-highest behind Saint Louis (.889, 8-1) and Charlotte (.647, 11-6).
• Richmond played the toughest league schedule of any other A-10 team this season, as the W-L record of its league foes was 98-70 in the regular season. The Spiders have at least one win this season versus all five teams in the tournament -- going 7-8 in those games.
• After just one complete-game all season, Richmond has fired three-consecutive in tournament play -- Bret Williams went the distance in the 6-0 loss to Charlotte, Matt Trent fired all nine innings in the 10-3 win over Dayton and Jacob Mayers fanned a career-high 11 in the 7-2 victory over Rhody.
• Senior RF Mike Mergenthaler, who has missed just three games in his college career that spans 206 games, currently leads the team in doubles (16), homers (7) and RBI (45), while his 166 career RBI ranks in the Top 30 among all active Division-I players and ranks third all-time at Richmond.
• Senior 1B Billy Barber has turned up the offense in A-10 play as he led the team with a .354 average in conference action and brought an eight-game hitting streak into the tournament. Four of his five homers have come in A-10 play and the senior currently ranks fifth on the Spiders all-time homers list with 37.
