CHARLOTTE, N.C. - CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Richmond was held in check by a one-hitter over 7.2 innings from Charlotte starter Tyler Barnette and the No. 25 49ers protected an early lead in a 6-0 victory over the Spiders Sunday at Hayes Stadium in Charlotte.
In clinching the rubber-match of the A-10 weekend series, the 49ers limited the Spiders to just two hits and improved to 36-11 overall and maintained a share of the A-10 lead at 15-6.
Mike Mergenthaler broke up Barnette's no-hit bid with a lead-off double in the seventh inning and a ninth-inning single by Matt Zink were the only hits for Richmond, which slipped to 23-21-2, 10-8.
The Spiders won Friday's game 3-0, and were edged Saturday 1-0 in 10 innings.
Mergenthaler also collected two more assists from his right-field position on Sunday and continues to lead the A-10 with 11 outfield assists this season. The senior gunned down Tony Montalbano trying to score from second in the first inning and erased Kevin Gillespie trying to go from first to third on a single in the fourth.
Charlotte pushed two across thanks to three hits in the first inning, two more runs came home in fourth and a two-RBI double from Corey Shaylor in the seventh inning gave the 49ers a 6-0 lead. Of Charlotte's 16 hits in the three-game series, the only extra base hit was Shaylor's double.
Barnette fanned eight and walked two as he improved to 7-1, while Richmond starter Matt Trent allowed five hits and four runs over four innings and slipped to 1-3.
Richmond is back in action Tuesday night versus VCU at The Diamond as the Spiders look to sweep the two-game season series from their cross-town rivals. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. and the game can be heard live on ESPN 950 in Richmond.
