Swim & Dive Wraps Up Day One at Pitt Quad Dual
01/14/2012 | Women's Swimming & Diving
PITTSBURGH - Junior Lauren Hines took top honors in the 100 back to lead Richmond Swim & Dive in the first day of action at Pitt's quad dual meet that also features Maryland and Villanova. The Spiders lead the Wildcats but trail the Panthers and Terps heading into day two.
"Our two months away from competition and the hard work we have been putting in at practice reflected our slow start this afternoon," said assistant coach Travis Stensby. "But we were able to rebound behind several strong swims in the last four events to gain some momentum heading into tomorrow."
Hines (Roanoke, Va./Hidden Valley) turned in a season-best time of 55.96 to coast to the win in the 100 back. She was the lone swimmer to touch in under 56.00 in the race.
Sophomore Mali Kobelja (Fort Wayne, Ind./R. Nelson Snider) picked up where she left off in November, finishing second in the 400 IM with a season-best time of 4:22.69. She would follow that up by clocking a 1:05.17 for a third-place showing in the 100 breast.
Returning to her native Pittsburgh for the first time as a collegian, senior Charlotte Brackett (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) combined with Hines, junior Mina Vucic (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) and sophomore Laura Jordan (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep) to close out day one with a second-place finish in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:36.09.
The second and final day of this weekend's quad dual competition at the Panthers' Trees Pool begins on Saturday at 9 a.m. with women's 3-meter diving.
