01/24/2012 | Baseball
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond baseball team was tabbed to finish fifth in the Atlantic 10 preseason coaches' poll as announced by the league office Tuesday.
Richmond is coming off a remarkable 2011 season, where it defeated Xavier and Dayton en route to the A-10 Championship game against top-seeded Charlotte. The Spiders fell to the eventual champion 49ers but four Richmond players garnered A-10 Tournament accolades in Mike Mergenthaler, Chris Cowell, Matt Zink and Jacob Mayers.
Richmond ended the season 29-27-2, its first winning mark and postseason appearance since 2007.
Defending champion Charlotte has been tabbed to claim its third-straight Atlantic 10 Conference Baseball title in 2012. Rhode Island, Dayton and Xavier round out the top four teams.
Richmond opens 2012 action at the Citadel Memorial Challenge in Charleston, S.C. Feb. 17 against Liberty at 12:00 p.m. Fans can follow Richmond Baseball on Twitter here.
