Swim & Dive Meets Duke, Clemson in Durham

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -Richmond Swim & Dive travels to Durham, N.C., on Saturday for a double dual meet with ACC foes Clemson and host Duke. The Spiders' final conference tune-up, which will be live tweeted throughout its duration, is set to begin at 11 a.m. at the Blue Devils' Taishoff Aquatic Pavilion. A complete schedule of events is listed below.
SCOUTING
THE BLUE DEVILS
Duke (3-6, 0-5 ACC), which will enter Saturday's meet after hosting
rival North Carolina the night before, is coming off a narrow loss to No. 11
Virginia on Friday. Sophomore Lauren Weaver highlighted Duke's day in the pool
with wins in the 50 free (23.69) and 100 fly (49.73), while freshman Ali Horn had
her versatility on full display with a winning time of 4:29.90 in the 400 IM. In
what was a strong outing for the Blue Devil relays, Weaver led her 200 medley
and 400 free relay squads to victory over the Cavaliers as well. Also making
waves was senior standout Jessica Lyden, who led a loaded Blue Devil diving
corp with a sweep of the 1-meter (291.23) and 3-meter (308.25) boards.
SCOUTING
THE TIGERS
Clemson (4-3, 1-2 ACC) will return to the water on Saturday after
racing NC State the previous evening in Raleigh. In their last outing, the
Tigers dropped a 183-104 decision to a strong North Carolina squad on Monday,
Jan. 16. Junior Meg Anderson swept the sprint free events with times of 23.35
in the 50 free and 51.12 in the 100 portion of the event. Classmate Kristen
Redmond finished nearly seven seconds ahead of the field in the 500 free with a
time of 5:04.53, while senior Sarah Bechard touched in 56.94 to capture the 100
fly. Anderson and Bechard also teamed up on the Tigers' winning 200 free relay
squad. In diving action, senior Cassie Self took runner-up honors in 1-meter
and classmate Brooke George turned in a third-place showing on the 3-meter
board.
LAST TIME
OUT
The Spiders enter their final dual meet of the season after capturing
11 of 14 swim events in Saturday's convincing 163-135 win over Rutgers at the
Robins Center Natatorium.
Senior Charlotte Brackett (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) racked up four wins to steal the show on "Senior Day", opening the afternoon by leading her 400 medley relay to victory with a season-best time of 3:48.74. She would go on to claim wins in the 50 free (23.96) and 100 free (52.43) while also leading a Spider senior 1-2-3 finish in the 200 free with a time of 1:53.90.
Fellow senior Alexi Kuska (Westfield, N.J./Westfield Senior) helped Brackett set the tone for the Spiders on Saturday, touching in a season-best time of 10:20.28 for a wire-to-wire win in the 500 free.
Junior Lauren Hines (Roanoke, Va./Hidden Valley) and sophomore Mali Kobelja (Fort Wayne, Ind./R. Nelson Snider) also did the seniors proud in the win. In addition to helping send the 200 free and 400 medley relays to victory, Hines swept the back races with winning times of 56.18 in the 100 and 2:04.91 in the 200 portion of the event. After combining with Brackett and Hines on the 400 medley relay, Kobelja grabbed gold in the 100 breast (1:04.43), 100 fly (56.76) and 200 IM with a season-best finish of 2:02.90.

AND COUNTING FOR KOBELJA
Mali Kobelja was named A-10 Women's Swim & Dive Performer of the
Week for the third time this season on Tuesday, Jan. 17. The sophomore
standout's seventh career weekly conference honor came on the heels of four
top-three finishes at Pitt's quad dual meet that featured a strong four-team
field consisting of the host Panthers, Maryland and Villanova.
Kobelja set a new season-best mark with her runner-up finish of 4:22.69 in the 400 IM while also winning her heat and securing second overall in the 200 portion of the event with a time of 2:05.55. She also took bronze in both the 100 and 200 breast races while clocking a 1:05.74 breast split to lead her 400 medley relay squad to a second-place showing ahead of Pitt and Villanova with a time of 3:52.11.
TITLEY
TWO-TIME A-10 ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Following a pair of top-five showings in Richmond's win over Rutgers
on Saturday, freshman Allison Titley (Richmond, Va./Saint Gertrude) was named A-10
Women's Swim & Dive Rookie of the Week for the second straight week by the
conference office on Monday.
Titley turned in a strong second-place finish of 2:05.71 to lead the Spiders in the 200 fly. The local product's time was just .09 seconds off her season best. She would also touch in for a top-five finish in the 100 portion of the event with a time of 59.18.
TOP-10
TIMES IN THE A-10
As the dual season nears an end, it is certainly worth noting that 14
Spiders have recorded top-10 times in the league in 2011-12. The list below
reflects which Spiders currently rank among the conference's best in their
respective events.
At least one Spider is featured in the top 10 in each swim event with four Spiders having turned in top-10 swims in the 50 free, 200 free and 400 IM. Mali Kobelja leads the league in 200 IM and 400 IM and is just three-hundredths of a second off the top time in the 100 breast. Lauren Hines sits second in both back events and third in the 100 free, while Charlotte Brackett boasts top-five finishes in the 50 free, 200 free and 100 back. Jessie Krebs and Lexi Kuska are currently second and third, respectively, in the 1000 free.
