Four-Run Sixth Propels Spiders Over Dayton

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team used a four-run sixth inning to beat the visiting Dayton Flyers, 5-4, on Sunday afternoon at Pitt Field. With the win, Richmond improves to 21-19 overall and to 8-7 in Atlantic 10 conference play. With the loss, Dayton falls to 21-24 on the year and to 10-5 in league play.
Sophomore Adam Forrer led the Spiders on Sunday afternoon, going 3-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored. Redshirt junior Bret Williams had a pinch-hit, two-run single while senior Bryan Conway had a double and drove in a run.
On the mound, sophomore Andrew Blum (5-2) tossed six innings of one-run baseball en route to earning the victory. Blum struck out a pair while allowing six hits. Senior closer Alex Maffett pitched the final three innings, earning his third save of the season.
After a scoreless first four innings, the Spiders jumped on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the fifth, pushing across an unearned run to take a 1-0 lead over the Flyers.
When Dayton responded and tied the game in the top of the sixth, Richmond broke the game open with a four spot in the bottom half.
After a leadoff walk, a UD error, and a groundout, runners were on second and third with one out for Ryan Mallory. Down in the count early, Mallory battled back to load the bases, drawing a walk. To the plate stepped Forrer, who plated a run with a soft line drive to left field, giving the lead back to the Spiders.
With the bases still loaded, Conway earned a RBI after getting hit by a pitch, adding to the Richmond advantage. Next up was the pinch hitter Williams, who singled through the right side of the infield, scoring two more and pushing the Spider lead to 5-1 after six complete.
Over the next three innings, the Flyers hung around, scoring two unearned runs in the top of the seventh to cut the lead to 5-3. In the top of the ninth, Dayton again took advantage of a Richmond error, making the lead just one, 5-4.
With one out and runners on first and second, Forrer was able to turn a 4-3 double play on a ground ball, ending the threat and securing the win for Richmond.
The Richmond Spiders baseball team will hit the road for a mid-week contest at George Mason. First pitch in Fairfax is scheduled for 3 p.m.
