UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Junior Rebecca Barry led the Richmond field hockey team with her third-career hat trick to a 6-1 win over city-rival VCU Sunday afternoon at Crenshaw Field. In addition to Barry, three other Spiders connected on goals.
With the win, Richmond improves to 8-5 on the season and 1-0 to start conference play, while the Rams fall to 6-7 overall and 0-1 in the Atlantic 10.
“Today was a great win and we are really happy,” commented Barry. “I think it is a bit of a shock because VCU is very good squad but we played really well today and were able to score when we needed to. It is always a battle when we play VCU, they are very physical and athletic.”
The Spiders dominated from start to finish as Richmond out shot VCU, 22-5, while taking the 8-1 corner advantage. Amy Cook led both teams with five shots with three on goal, while three other Spiders fired three shots apiece.
The Richmond scoring drive opened up with a goal from Avery Safford in the 10th minute of the game. Goals from Barry, Kerri McDonald and Emma Johansson made it a 4-0 game at the half.
“We really connected on passes today. We have been really working on that this week. I think the first half was probably the best half we have played this season and it was really great to see what we have been working on in practice pay off,” added Barry.
Barry's two goals to start the second period, one two minutes into the half and the second in the 47th minute, concluded the Spider scores, while VCU's lone goal resulted at the 51:38 mark.
The Richmond defense has been stellar this season as it has only allowed one goal or better in all eight this season.
“It was great coming out and getting our first A-10 win and setting the tone in conference play,” commented Chelsea Davies. “We have a huge rivalry with VCU and it was nice to play our game and execute what we have been practicing. I think we are peaking at the right moment and I am more than happy with our performances lately. I couldn't ask for a better group of girls to go out there with.”
The Spiders will be back in action when they host conference foe Saint Francis Friday, Oct. 18 at 4 p.m.
