ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Richmond field hockey team shut out the Saint Louis Billikens, 2-0, in Atlantic 10 action Sunday afternoon at the Soccer Park. Juniors Helen Warner and Rebecca Barry found the back of the cage as the Spiders picked up their fifth-straight win.
“The team was able to celebrate a first-time goal for Helen Warner,” commented Richmond head coach Gina Lucido. “It's always valuable when a team keeps you humble and hungry, and St. Louis did that today. Lauren Bruce has done a great job with her squad and the team follows her strong leadership.”
Richmond improved to 10-5 on the season and remains undefeated in conference play with a 3-0 record, while Saint Louis fell to 1-15 overall and 0-3 in the A-10.
The Spiders controlled the game from start to finish as they out shot the Billikens, 23-5, and took the 9-4 corner advantage. Barry led both teams with six shots and four on goal, while sophomore Taylor Deitrick followed with five shots and two on goal.
The Spiders got on the board early in the first half. Junior Helen Warner charted her first-career goal when senior Chelsea Davies served it to her in the circle at the 5:17 mark.
After the intermission, Barry found the back of the cage off one of her signature moves with popping it over the keeper and connecting on the open goal to make it a 2-0 ball game in the 54th minute.
Barry has recorded at least one goal in the last three games as she leads the team with 12 goals this season.
Senior Anna Zarkoski picked up all 70 minutes in goal as she recorded her fifth shutout of the season. She stopped all four Saint Louis shots on goal to improve to 10-5 on the year.
“Our preparation for next weekend's games is of most importance and the team knows they have to go beyond lukewarm to be worthy of greatness,” added Lucido.
The Spiders will be back in action Friday, Oct. 25 when they travel to No. 10-ranked Massachusetts at 1 p.m.
