AMHERST, Mass. – The Richmond field hockey team was edged by No. 12-ranked Massachusetts, 2-1, in a shootout Friday afternoon at Garber Field. Freshman Emma Johansson found the back of the cage for the Spiders.
"After each gut wrenching battle this season the team has come away demonstrating more about who they are in character and strength and this I greatly appreciate," commented Richmond head coach Gina Lucido. "UMass is a very talented program and they put the finishing touches on a heated game."
This was the first Atlantic 10 loss for Richmond this season as the Spiders are now 10-6 overall and 3-1 in the league.
Despite the setback, the Spiders controlled most of the contest as Richmond outshot the Minutewomen 17-13, and took the 10-4 corner advantage. Freshman Kelly Quinn led the team with five shots and three on goal.
UMass (13-4, 4-0) got on the board first in the 24th minute before Johansson tied the game at the 47:47 mark for her eighth goal of the season. But the Minutewomen took an early advantage in the shootout, connecting on their first two before senior Chelsea Davies found the back of the cage for Richmond.
The Spider defense was close to perfection forcing the overtime periods. Spider goalkeeper Anna Zarkoski was between the posts for the entire 100 minutes, picked up seven saves on the day and forced one missed goal in the shootout.
"We have every intent on finishing the race of this season at the top," added Lucido. "Lock Haven will be waiting and we look to be stronger and undettered. These ladies are worthy of greatness."
Richmond will be back in action Sunday, Oct. 27 when it faces Lock Haven at 1 p.m.
