UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond field hockey team downed the La Salle Explorers, 7-2, in Atlantic 10 action Friday afternoon at Crenshaw Field. Five Spiders connected on goals, including Rebecca Barry, Avery Safford, Kelly Quinn, Samantha Ostoich and Taylor Deitrick.
With the win, the Spiders improved to 12-6 on the season and 5-1 in the conference. La Salle dropped to 5-13 overall and 1-5 in the A-10.
"Today was not our best performance," commented Barry. "But we came out in the second half and were able to turn it around. The girls who came in were very effective so we were please toward the end. We have been scoring a lot at home and we love our home turf and the atmosphere."
Richmond dominated from start to finish as it outshot the Explorers 21-9. Barry led both squads with seven shots and three goals, while five other Spiders recorded two shots apiece. The hat trick is Barry's second of the season and fourth of her career.
Barry put the first point on the board four minutes into the ball game when Chelsea Davies at the top of the circle set her up. Barry then flicked the ball over the goalie's head and into the cage.
Safford found the back of the cage at the 14:18 mark to make it a 2-0 ball game, before La Salle sneaked one through 10 minutes later. Quinn capped off the scoring drive for the Spiders at the 28:49 mark as the two teams went into the break with Richmond up 3-1.
Barry opened the second half with two-straight goals in the first three minutes. Ostoich found the back of the cage off a beautifully executed corner play that was set up by Amy Cooke in the 42nd minute.
Deitrick recorded the final goal for the Spiders at 50:50 mark as it marks the fifth time this season Richmond has won by five or more points.
Anna Zarkoski recorded the win for the Spiders as she played 51 minutes between the posts and picked up four saves. Kelley Wentling relieved Zarkoski in the 51st minute to collect 20 minutes in goal.
"To come out in the second half and take our chances and really improve our play was really good. We are still not satisfied with the way we are playing so the next one is going to be a big one before the A-10 Championships," commented Cooke.
The Spiders will cap off the regular season at home Sunday, Nov. 3 when they host Saint Joseph's at 12 p.m. on Senior Day.
