UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond field hockey team blanked the Saint Joseph's Hawks, 5-0, Sunday afternoon on Senior Day at Crenshaw Field. Four Spiders found the back of the cage, including Taylor Deitrick, Samantha Ostoich, Amy Cooke and Kelly Quinn.
The Spiders improved to 13-6 on the season and 6-1 in the Atlantic 10 to clinch a second-place seed in the conference tournament Friday. The Hawks dropped to 6-13 overall and 3-4 in the league.
“With it being Senior Day there are always so many emotions and our team talks about distractions all the time and they can be really good ones,” commented Richmond head coach Gina Lucido. “I knew that the girls wanted to honor the seniors and of course everyone wants to end their season on a high note. The thing that was staring us in the face was a really hungry St. Joe's opponent. They are a good team and they wanted to secure a spot in the A-10 Tournament and that is dangerous.”
Richmond controlled the tempo from start to finish as the Spider defense only allowed three St. Joe's shots. Richmond pulled away with 20 shots and took the 11-2 corner advantage. Cooke led both teams with five shots, three on frame, a goal and an assist. Chelsea Davies and Rebecca Barry followed with four shots and an assist each.
The Spiders fired 11 shots in the first half but went into the break leading 1-0 thanks to Ostoich at the 28:07 mark. The junior found the back of the cage off a Richmond corner, one of eight in the first 35 minutes, which was assisted by Cooke.
The second half opened up for the Spiders as they connected on four goals off nine shots. Deitrick connected off a deflected Barry shot in the 40th minute to give Richmond the 2-0 lead.
Cooke found the back of the cage off a corner at the 54:54 mark that was taken by Christina Amorose and set up by Allison Haas. Deitrick again slid one passed the goalkeeper in the 59th minute, before Quinn capped off the Richmond scoring drive at the 67:30 mark on a perfect pass from Amorose.
Anna Zarkoski secured the 5-0 victory as the senior was perfect in goal picking up two saves and the shutout. Rachel Barnett was between the posts for the Hawks as she allowed the five goals and picked up eight saves.
The Richmond Athletic Department honored the five seniors: Amorose, Jessica Hollis, Davies, Paige Venables and Zarkoski, prior to start time this morning.
“We needed to come out and put all the distractions aside and this was the last opportunity to perform without the huge pressure to win or go home,” added Lucido. “So it was absolutely vital today to win and to win well and I am so pleased that they did. It was an outstanding team performance.”
The Spiders will be back in action Friday in the semifinal round of the 2013 Atlantic 10 Championship when they will face the No. 3 seed, Lock Haven, at 11 a.m. in Amherst, Mass.
