AMHERST, Mass. – The Richmond field hockey team blanked the Lock Haven Bald Eagles, 4-0, Friday afternoon at Garber Field on the campus of UMass in the semifinal round of the 2013 Atlantic 10 Tournament. The Spiders will look to bring home their eighth Championship crown Saturday at 2 p.m.
Richmond improved 14-6 overall, while Lock Haven concluded its season 14-7.
"The Spiders put together a really solid performance against a tough Lock Haven team," commented head coach Gina Lucido. "While we felt strong pressure in moments, the Spider defense held firm and our attacking front put the game in our hands, sealing a spot in the Championship."
Rebecca Barry led both teams with two shots, a goal and an assist that was good for three points. Richmond out shot the Bald Eagles, 11-4, and took two corners. Kerri McDonald, Kelly Quinn and Emma Johansson also found the back of the cage for the Spiders.
Barry connected on Richmond's first goal at the 25:34 mark thanks to Chelsea Davies. Barry collected her 16th goal of the season off a shot from the right side that connected low near the far post.
Richmond fired five unanswered shots and took one corner in the first half as the two teams went into the break with the Spiders up 1-0. Taylor Deitrick lead both teams with two shots and one on goal in the first 35 minutes.
Almost 10 minutes into the second half, McDonald made it a two-point ball game in the 44th minute. At the 44:32 mark, Richmond was rewarded with a penalty corner taken by Christina Amorose. Following two Davies shots that were saved, McDonald connected on the reflection.
At the 54:27 mark, Quinn charted her fifth goal of the season. The A-10 All-Rookie selection was given the ball in the circle, dribbled around the defenders and connected toward the left post to give the Spiders the 3-0 lead with 15 minutes to play.
Four minutes later, A-10 All-Rookie selection Johansson connected on the final goal of the game off a pass from Barry that was deflected in by close range.
First-Team A-10 All-Conference selection Anna Zarkoski recorded the shutout for the Spiders. The senior charted all 70 minutes in goal and came up with two saves.
"All season we have prepared for this opportunity and we are eager and focused for tomorrow," added Lucido.
The Spiders will look to bring home their eighth Atlantic 10 Championship tomorrow, Nov. 9 at 2 p.m. against the top-seeded UMass Minutewomen at Garber Field.
