05/17/2013 | Baseball
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team fell to the VCU Rams on Thursday night, 6-3, at The Diamond.
With the setback, Richmond's overall record drops to 30-20 on the season and to 13-9 in Atlantic 10 conference play. The Rams improved to 26-26 on the year and to 10-12 in league action.
Senior Jacob Mayers went 2-for-5 on the day with a RBI, while junior Nick Poulos also drove in a run in the loss. Freshman Tanner Stanley had a pair of hits including a double and scored a run, while classmate Tyler Beckwith went 2-for-5. Junior Mike Small was 2-for-4 on the day with a run scored.
Making his first career appearance out of the bullpen, sophomore LHP Zak Sterling was solid for the Spiders, allowing just one run on five hits over 5.2 innings of work.
Trailing 6-1 in the top of the ninth, Richmond tried to get a late rally started. Small led off the frame with a single and two batters later moved to third on a double off the bat of Stanley.
After a balk scored Small from third, Mayers drove home Stanley with a RBI single up the middle. That's where the rally stalled, however, as VCU was able to hold on for the 6-3 victory.
The Richmond Spiders will continue their series with the VCU Rams on Friday morning at The Diamond. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
NOTES: Earlier on Thursday, Mayers was named to the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Watch List … Entering play on Friday, the Spiders sit in a tie for sixth place with George Washington in the A-10 standings, who Richmond hold the tie-breaker over after sweeping the Colonials earlier this season … Seven teams earn berths to the conference tournament this season.
