Field Hockey Picked Second In A-10 Preseason Poll
08/15/2013 | Field Hockey
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Richmond field hockey team was selected to finish second in the Atlantic 10 Conference in a vote conducted by the league's head coaches announced Thursday afternoon.
“I think it's always important to look at any poll with perspective. What matters most is where you finish in the Atlantic-10 tournament,” said Richmond head coach Gina Lucido. “The taste in our mouths from last year's championship is certainly valuable fuel in pressing on towards the A-10 trophy. It will be a battle and we are eager to face it.”
The Spiders return five All A-10 picks including first-team midfielders Rebecca Barry and Chelsea Davis, defender Amy Cooke and goalkeeper Anna Zarkoski, who led the league with a 1.39 goals-against average last season. The 2012 A-10 Rookie of the Year Taylor Deitrick is back in the mix for the Spiders after scoring 12 goals in 21 games a season ago.
2012 Atlantic 10 Conference Champion Massachusetts was picked to win the league, while VCU follows Richmond in third. Lock Haven and La Salle were tabbed fourth and fifth, while Saint Joseph's, Saint Francis and Saint Louis round out the bottom, respectively.
The Spiders open the season hosting the American Eagles Friday, Aug. 30 at 4 p.m. at Crenshaw Field.
