Field Hockey Falls To American In Overtime
08/30/2013 | Field Hockey
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond field hockey team fell to the American Eagles, 2-1, in an overtime thriller Friday to open the 2013 season. Senior Anna Zarkoski led the Spiders with eight saves in goal.
"American did a very good job at executing their game plan," commented Richmond head coach Gina Lucido. "They are always a really strong team. They created a lot of momentum and we got a great counter-attacking goal, but I would say that the majority of the game American was in control."
Richmond came out strong in the first, scoring early. Freshman Emma Johansson scored her first collegiate goal when junior Rebecca Barry sent a pass from close range and Johansson fired to the left side in the sixth minute.
The Spiders controlled the rest of the first half taking six more shots to American's three to go into the break with the 1-0 lead.
American responded in the second half out shooting Richmond 10-3. Grace Wilson tied the score at one at the 63:47 mark off the Eagles' fifth corner of the half to force overtime.
In the extra period, the Spiders' best chance for victory came on a break away down the right side from Barry, but her shot missed just right of the goal.
American earned the overtime victory at the 79:40 mark, when Kati Rothenhoefer scored the game winner.
"For us as a team, I feel like our girls competed," added Lucido. "I am very proud of them that they came and stood firm. I don't think that there was any lack of courage in them, but early on what we talk about is that you find those loop holes in the areas that the team expose in you and we are going to find them and make those changes."
The Richmond Spiders will be back in action at Crenshaw Field when it hosts the Louisville Cardinals. Start time is scheduled for 12 p.m.
