FARMVILLE, Va. – The Richmond field hockey team blanked the Longwood Lancers, 3-0, for its fifth-straight victory Thursday night at the Athletics Complex. Three Spiders found the back of the cage, including Samantha Ostoich, Emma Johansson and Rebecca Barry.
“The Spiders put together a great second-half performance and made some big strides in maturity today,” commented head coach Gina Lucido. “I was so pleased with our ability to manage Longwood's strong pressure and change the momentum in our favor without conceding.”
Richmond (5-4) outshot Longwood (3-6), 13-3, while taking the 7-2 penalty corner advantage. Barry led both teams with six shots with three on goal.
It wasn't until the second period that the Spiders came alive. The first goal was scored at the 44:57 mark when Ostoich tipped it in from the corner from the right side of the cage from Amy Cooke.
With just under five minutes left in the game, Johansson made it a 2-0 ball game found herself alone in the circle and connected off her shot that was deflected off the Lancer goalkeeper.
Barry recorded the final goal of the game at the 68th minute off the final corner of the game taken by Lindsay Stevens and set up by Allison Haas.
Anna Zarkoski was in goal for Richmond and recorded all 70 minutes between the pipes. The senior collected two saves as she recorded her fifth win of the season. Kaye Goulding picked up five saves for the Lancers.
“We face a talented Wake Forest squad this weekend and are ready to continue sharpening ourselves through every opponent,” added Lucido. “Our eyes are always on the prize.”
The Spiders will return to the field when they travel to No. 15-ranked Wake Forest Sunday, Sept. 29 at 1 p.m. The event will be streamed live for a fee.
