Barry Helps Spider Hockey Secure Spot At A-10s
11/02/2014 | Field Hockey
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Senior Rebecca Barry notched five goals in the Richmond field hockey 6-1 win over the Davidson Wildcats Sunday afternoon at Crenshaw Field on Senior Day.
“We are absolutely delighted,” commented Barry. “Our main goal coming into today was to secure our spot into the A-10s next weekend. We knew we would have a challenge ahead of us today coming off of a loss last night against Duke. Today we came and were ready and I think our girls did a fantastic job. They really stood up for each other and there were six of us today fighting for a chance to wear this jersey again and I think we really showed that out on the field.”
The win secured a spot for the Spiders in the 2014 Atlantic 10 Tournament, which is being held on Crenshaw Field Nov. 7-8. Richmond was granted the No. 2 seed and will play Saint Francis on Friday at 11 a.m.
Richmond improved to 10-9 overall and 6-2 in the league with the win over the Wildcats. Davidson's season came to an end as it finished 3-16 overall and 2-6 in the A-10.
The Spiders dominated from start to finish today as they outshot the Wildcats, 14-3, and took the 7-0 corner advantage. All three shots from Davidson came in the second period.
Barry didn't waste any time as she notched the first goal two minutes into the contest and later made it a 2-0 ball game at the 4:51 mark.
A goal from freshman Hannah Thomson came in the 26th minute when sophomore Emma Johansson dished it in the circle and Thomson fired low for her second goal of the season.
Three more goals in the second period from Barry made it a six-point lead for the Spiders until Davidson got the final goal in the final minute of the contest.
Barry's five goals ties her for the single-game school record at Richmond. She shares the honor with Sarah Blythe-Wood who recorded five goals on Oct. 9, 2009.
“Five goals today, I didn't have that written the script,” commented Richmond head coach Gina Lucido. “I knew that Rebecca was going to be big for us, but that is just her. Every time you think that you have seen it all from her it is not even close. She is a unique young lady and she just has a God-given gift to make things happen just when your team needs it to happen.”
Barry led both teams with eight shots, which were all on goal, while classmate Blair Kline had two assists. Junior Taylor Deitrick was threatening with three shots and two on goal, while Thomson followed with two shots and a goal.
Senior Kelley Wentling recorded the win for the Spiders as she played all 70 minutes in goal and picked up one save. She upped her season record to 8-7 overall.
Davidson played two goalkeepers with Emily Leytham getting the loss as she picked up five saves in 55 minutes. Connie Cape played the final 16 minutes as she allowed one Spider goal.
Prior to start time today, the Richmond athletic department honored the six seniors, Barry, Kline, Samantha Ostoich, Allison Siegel, Helen Warner and Wentling for Senior Day.
Richmond will return to Crenshaw Field on Friday, Nov. 7 for the first round on the Atlantic 10 Tournament to play No. 3-seed Saint Francis at 11 a.m. For all the information on the 2014 A-10 Field Hockey Tournament, click here.
