Three Spiders With Two Goals in 18-9 Loss at No. 9 UVa.
02/20/2014 | Women's Lacrosse
A trio of Spiders scored two goals each, but the No. 9 Virginia Cavaliers showed too much quickness and firepower as Richmond dropped an 18-9 women's lacrosse decision in Charlottesville. Richmond and Virginia are both 1-2 this season.
The Cavaliers scored twice in the first 10 minutes before a Richmond score was answered by sophomore Emily Newman (New Albany, Ohio) at the 19:12 mark in the opening half.
The teams then traded goals, the second from Richmond coming from junior Anna Jeszeck (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) for a 3-2 score.
That was as close as the Spiders got the margin, with the Cavs putting three-straight goals in the back of the net before Richmond's only back-to-back scoring opportunity of the game. Within a 30-second stretch, the Spiders got goals from senior Hayley Ross (Annapolis, Md.) and junior Bailey Zerr (Denver, Colo.) to cut the lead to 6-4.
The Cavs scored five of the last seven goals of the half, with junior Janie Penney (Short Hills, N.J.) scoring both, including a goal with two seconds remaining in the period.
The defense was stingier in the second half, with the Cavaliers outscoring Richmond 7-3 after an 11-6 first half.
Ross, Penney and Zerr finished with two goals each, with five different Spiders assisting on a goal in the game.
Junior goalie Emily Boyce (Middletown, Md.) had a season-best 11 saves for the Spiders.
Richmond remains a road team for the next two contests, with a Wednesday afternoon game at American, beginning at 3 p.m., next on the docket.
