Spiders Fall In 10 Innings At Dayton

DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team fell in 10 innings at Dayton on Sunday, 10-9.
With the loss, Richmond falls to 8-12-1 on the season overall and to 1-2 in Atlantic 10 conference play. Dayton improves to 7-14 on the year and to 2-1 in league action.
Sophomores Matt Dacey and Tyler Beckwith continued their hot hitting on Sunday, leading the Richmond offense. Dacey had a pair of hits and drove in three runs, while Beckwith went 3-for-5 with two RBI. Junior Ryan Cook also had three hits on the afternoon, driving in one.
Both senior Cory Moheit and sophomore Doug Kraeger totaled a pair of hits each with one RBI, while sophomore Tanner Stanley reached base four times, singling and drawing three walks.
Out of the bullpen, junior RHP James Lively pitched well for the Spiders, tossing 4.2 shutout innings, striking out three.
After Dayton scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, the Spiders cut the UD advantage in half in the top of the second inning. After a pair of singles from Beckwith and sophomore Jansen Fraser, Moheit plated a run with a single through the left side of the infield, making the Flyer lead 2-1.
With the Flyers leading 4-1, Richmond battled back to tie the game in the top of the fourth inning. After a one-out double from Kraeger, Dacey scored him from second base with a RBI single to right field.
Next up was Cook, who doubled to left field to put runners on second and third for Beckwith. The sophomore scored the Spiders' third run when his grounder was mishandled by the Dayton shortstop, putting runners at first and third. Richmond tied the game with the team's second double steal of the season, with Beckwith stealing second and Cook swiping home. After five complete innings, the game was tied, 4-4.
The Spiders seized control of the game in the top of the sixth inning, exploding for five runs. After a single and a pair of walks, the bases were loaded for Kraeger, who gave the Spiders the lead with a RBI single to left field. Dacey followed, plating a pair of runs with a double to right field.
The hits kept coming for Richmond, as Cook knocked in another run with a RBI single up the middle. Beckwith drove in the final run of the frame, scoring Dacey with a single to right field. All told, the Spiders scored five runs on five hits and a pair of walks in the frame to take a 9-4 lead over Dayton.
After a scoreless seventh inning, the Flyers struck for five runs in the bottom of the eighth, tying the game at 9-9.
With the Spiders unable to plate a run in the top of the 10th, Dayton won in the bottom half on a foul out to right field.
The Richmond Spiders will be back on the field this Tuesday when the team begins a two-game, midweek series with Brown at Pitt Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
