Cook's Gem Not Enough For Spiders At Saint Louis

ST. LOUIS – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team dropped another tight game at Saint Louis on Saturday afternoon, 5-3.
With the loss, Richmond falls to 15-21-1 on the season overall and to 6-9 in Atlantic 10 conference play. With the victory, Saint Louis improves to 23-14 on the year and to 11-3 in league action.
Senior Mike Small led the Spider offense on Saturday, going 2-for-4 with a RBI. Sophomore Doug Kraeger and freshman Kurtis Brown also knocked in runs for Richmond in the setback.
Junior RHP Ryan Cook was tremendous on Saturday afternoon for the Spiders. The hurler pitched six innings, allowing just one run on one hit while striking out three. Cook didn't allow a hit until Saint Louis began the seventh inning with a single.
After a scoreless first two innings, the Spiders manufactured a run in the top of the third inning. With one out, seniors J.B. Gadd and Nick Poulos both drew walks. After sophomore Tanner Stanley was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Small plated Gadd with a RBI groundout to second base, giving the Spiders a 1-0 lead.
The Billikens broke through in the bottom of the seventh inning, mounting a two-out rally that netted five runs to take a 5-1 lead over the Spiders.
In the top of the eighth inning, the Spiders cut in to the Billiken advantage when Kraeger scored Stanley from third base on a RBI groundout, making the SLU lead 5-2.
In the top of the ninth, the Spiders looked to rally. After a double from sophomore Jansen Fraser and a single from senior Cory Moheit, Brown plated a run with a RBI single to center field. The Richmond rally ended there, however, as the Spiders fell on the road, 5-3.
The Richmond Spiders will be back in action on Wednesday when the team heads to Charlottesville, Va. to face No. 1-ranked Virginia. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
