PHILADELPHIA – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team defeated the Atlantic 10-leading Saint Joseph's Hawks on Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia, 8-5.
With the victory, Richmond improves to 19-24-1 on the season overall and to 10-11 in A-10 play. Saint Joseph's falls to 29-11 and to 15-5 in league action with the loss.
Sophomore OF Jansen Fraser continued his hot play of late, going 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI. Freshman DH Kurtis Brown had two hits, including a solo home run, while senior C J.B. Gadd also had a pair of knocks, driving in one.
Sophomore SS Tyler Beckwith had a RBI triple, while senior 2B Adam Forrer hit a run-scoring double. Senior OF Nick Poulos also had a RBI in the win.
Junior RHP Ryan Cook (4-1) pitched seven innings to earn the win, allowing five runs, four earned, while striking out eight. Out of the bullpen, RHP Peter Bayer tossed 1.2 innings of one-hit ball, while RHP Ray Harron recorded the game's final out to record his fourth save of the year.
Trailing 2-0 in the top of the second inning, Beckwith got the Richmond scoring started, lining a run-scoring triple to left-center field, cutting the Hawks' lead to 2-1.
After Kurtis Brown tied the game in the top of the fourth inning with a towering, solo homer over the fence in right-center field, SJU scored three runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 5-2 lead.
That's all the scoring that Saint Joseph's would have, however, as Richmond would go on to score the game's final six runs.
After Fraser cut the SJU advantage to 5-3 with a RBI double in the fifth inning, the sophomore tied the game in the top of the seventh with a two-run single to left field. Through seven innings, the game was all knotted up at 5-5.
In the top of the eighth inning, the Spiders took a lead it would not give up. After Poulos scored a run on a fielder's choice, Gadd lined a sacrifice fly to center field, making the Richmond advantage, 7-5.
Next inning, Forrer added an insurance run with a RBI double, pushing the Spider lead to 8-5. In the bottom of the frame, Bayer got the first two outs before making way to Harron, who induced a game-ending fielder's choice to secure the win for Richmond, 8-5.
The Richmond Spiders will be back in action on Tuesday, when the team travels to Coppin State for a road contest. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
