Safford Notches Game-Winner In OT At Kent State
09/12/2014 | Field Hockey
KENT, OHIO – Junior Avery Safford notched the game-winner to lift the Richmond field hockey team over Kent State, 4-3, in a thrilling overtime victory Friday afternoon at Murphy-Mellis Field.
“The Spider team had one of the best come-from-behind wins I have seen in my time,” commented Richmond head coach Gina Lucido. “The team played with relentless effort and poised mentality under fiery competition. All three Spider captains scored a goal and Avery Safford put OT to a quick end on a combined team series goal.”
It was in the 73rd minute that the junior forward hit the game-winning goal. Safford rebounded off a Rebecca Barry shot that was blocked to cap off the 4-3 win for the Spiders in the extra period.
Richmond (3-2) fell behind early as Kent State (2-3) notched two early goals in the first half. The two teams went into the second period with the Golden Flashes up 2-0.
Senior Samantha Ostoich got the ball rolling for the Spiders as she found the back of the cage first at the 43:23 mark to put Richmond on the board. The senior connected off the Spiders' fourth corner of the half.
After a Kent State goal in the 49th minute to go up 3-1, Richmond recorded back-to-back goals. Barry registered at the 53:23 mark and Amy Cooke tied the score 40 seconds before the end of the period on a penalty stroke.
The Spiders outshot Kent State, 19-15, while the two teams were even in corners with six. Junior Caroline McCabe played a career-high 73 minutes in goal as she made her first career start, making four saves.
“Carolina McCabe showed fearless play in her first start and made a vital breakaway save that kept our comeback alive,” added Lucido. “Today was a thrilling victory for our program and incredible momentum.”
Richmond will be back in action Sunday, Sept. 14 to take on Michigan State at 12 p.m. on Murphy-Mellis Field on Kent State's campus.
