KENT, OHIO – The Richmond field hockey team fell to No. 19-ranked Michigan State, 6-1, Sunday afternoon at Murphy-Mellis Field.

“Today was a very bitter end to a tough road weekend,” commented Richmond head coach Gina Lucido. “Despite getting on the board early, we were not able to find any momentum shift to a barrage of Michigan State goals. The team's effort and attitude remains top notch and we are determined to not waste these teachable losses.”

Despite the loss, Richmond (3-3) was only outshot by just one as Michigan State (4-3) took the 15-14 advantage, while the Spiders won the lead in corners, 5-2. Emma Johansson and Amy Cooke led the squad with three shots each. Johansson recorded the lone goal for Richmond early in the first half.

At the 8:30 mark, the Spiders took the 1-0 lead when Cooke fired a shot on goal that was blocked and Johansson was there to connect on the rebound for her first goal of the season.

Michigan State then responded with six goals, three in each half.

The Spiders split time in the cage with Caroline McCabe making her second-straight start and playing the entire first half. Kelley Wentling then came in for the second period and made three saves.

The Spiders will cap off a five-game road swing when it returns to Richmond, Va., Friday, Sept. 19 to face city-rival VCU at 5 p.m. to start conference play.
