Spider Hockey Shuts Out Ohio For Second-Straight Win
09/28/2014 | Field Hockey
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond field hockey team cruised past the Ohio Bobcats, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at Crenshaw Field. Freshman Katrina Balatgek and senior Rebecca Barry found the back of the cage for the Spiders.
“It was so important to us to get two wins this weekend,” commented Richmond head coach Gina Lucido. “We have been statistically pretty just even with all of our opponents up to this point of the season and we weren't always getting the result we wanted so it was very significant to get two shutouts this weekend. It is a big momentum shift for us and gave us a lot of confidence into the core of our team.”
With the win, Richmond improved to 6-4 on the season, while the Bobcats fell to 2-6 on the year.
The Spiders dominated play throughout the entire 70 minutes as they hit back-to-back goals in the second half. Richmond out shot the Bobcats, 25-3, and took the 10-3 corner advantage. Barry led both teams with six shots and three on goal, while Amy Cooke and Balatgek followed with five shots each.
After going into the break scoreless, the Spiders got on the board in the 53rd minute when Barry notched an unassisted goal for her fourth goal of the season. Four minutes later, Balatgek hit her first goal as a Spider to seal the 2-0 win for the Spiders.
Senior Kelley Wentling played all 70 minutes in goal for Richmond as she picked up her second-straight shutout. The Spider defense held the Bobcats to just three shots with zero on frame. Ohio's goalkeeper Brittany Walker picked up eight saves on the day.
The Spiders will be back in action Friday, Oct. 3 when they travel to Saint Joseph's at 3:30 p.m.
