MERION STATION, Pa. – Four Spiders found the back of the cage to lift the Richmond field hockey team to another shutout as it downed Saint Joseph's, 5-0, Friday afternoon at Ellen Ryan Field.
“This was a great team win,” commented Richmond head coach Gina Lucido. “We have had big changes in our line-up with injury and the team adjusted well and with great courage. Our attack has been under a lot of pressure to rise to the call of impacting the game in a threatening manner and they hit the mark today.”
Freshman Kasey Gilbride led Richmond with two goals, while junior Taylor Deitrick, sophomore Kelly Quinn and freshman Hannah Thomson followed with a goal each for the Spiders, as Richmond improved to 7-4 on the season and remain undefeated in the A-10 with three wins.
Richmond continued its threatening offense as it outshot Saint Joseph's (5-6, 1-2 A-10), 17-9, but the Hawks just edged the Spiders in corners, 7-6. To go along with its five goals, Richmond fired seven more shots on goal that the SJU keeper, Amelia Deibler, stopped.
The two teams were about even in shots in the first 35 minutes. The Spiders though went into the break with a 3-0 advantage as Deitrick, Gilbride and Quinn hit goals. Deitrick was set up by Emma Johansson just 4:30 into the game. Gilbride then responded four minutes later off a corner with her first goal of the day that Allison Haas and Avery Safford set up. Then, at the 10:43 mark, Quinn connected off a cross directly in front of the cage from the A-10 Rookie of the Week Katrina Balatgek.
Late in the second period, it was Gilbride again as she made it a 4-0 ball game when she chipped the ball over the outstretched keeper that was assisted by Johansson in the 54th minute. Thomson capped off the Richmond offense with her first goal of her Spider career off a deflected shot from Rebecca Barry at the 60:03 mark.
“Defending to another shutout and having four different goal scorers was something to celebrate,” added Lucido. “Goalkeeper Kelley Wentling was excellent in goal to the final minutes and showed how she can command a circle.”
Senior Kelley Wentling remains perfect in goal as she picked up her third-straight shutout to improve to 6-2 on the season.
The Spiders will stay in Philly for a matchup against A-10 foe La Salle Sunday, Oct. 5 at DeVincent Field. Start time is scheduled for noon.
