Spiders Score Season-High Four Goals To Beat JMU
09/29/2014 | Women's Soccer
Three second half goals, two from redshirt freshman Meaghan Carrigan (Greenville, South Carolina) propelled the Richmond Spiders to their highest scoring output of the season in a 4-2 home win over James Madison Sunday at Robins Stadium. The Spiders and visiting Dukes ended the day with identical 6-5 records.
For the second time this season, the school record for assists was tied when freshman Lexi Prillaman (Magnolia, Delaware) delivered three helpers in the contest. Junior Ashley Reifner (Mechanicsville, Virginia) also assisted on two goals in the contest.
The teams fought for possession in the opening half, with Riefner breaking through for the first goal of the match in the 30th minute. Prillaman brought the ball up the right sideline and sent it ahead for junior Shannon Colligan (Greenwich, Connecticut), who crossed to Riefner for the 15-yard one-touch, near-post goal.

That score held to the half and the teams took nine shots each in the opening period. Richmond freshman keeper Katie Brennan made the start for her first career appearance and had five saves in the opening half.
The second half started with a flourish as the Spiders scored three times in the first 10 minutes of that stanza. Carrigan got a goal in the first minute of the period after Prillaman again drove the ball up the sideline and centered to Riefner, for a pass to Carrigan, who took a touch and fired down the middle past back-up keeper Kate Courtner from nine yards out for the 2-0 lead. Courtner had been a halftime substitution for starter Ellen Forrest.
Less than six minutes later, Riefner intercepted a JMU goal kick and fired it forward, deflected by a Dukes defender into the air, where Carrigan got in the air and poked it near post from six yards out for the 3-0 lead.
Less than three minutes later, freshman Lindsey Williams (Williamsburg, Virginia / Warhill HS) pushed the ball past the defense where Prillaman crossed it past the diving keeper and a run from junior Darian Podmajersky (Yorba Linda, California) was timed right to the ball on a tough angle past the goal, which she touched in across the goal mouth to the back far-post corner and the 4-0 lead.
The Dukes stayed in their attacking mode and managed a pair of late goals, the first of the season from Kelly Kerrigan in the 80th minute and the third of the season from Rachel Ivey in the 83rd minute.
Carrigan leads UR with eight goals. Riefner is second with six and Podmajersky scored her third of the season.
Brennan got the win by tying the team season high with nine saves (1-0). The loss went to Courter (1-2).
Richmond will begin Atlantic 10 Conference play next weekend with a road contest at Duquesne Friday night before returning home for the home league opener Sunday at 1 p.m. against Saint Bonaventure.
NOTES: The Spiders are 5-0 this season when one player scores two or more goals… Prillaman joined Riefner as players with three assists this season… Former Spider Kirsi Cronk set the mark with two games in the 1997 season with three assists each… Carrigan has scored twice in three different games this season for her 17 points… Riefner's six goals and six assists give her a team-best 18 points… Colligan leads the Atlantic 10 with nine assists and needs just four more to tie the school record for helpers in a single season... The Spiders are off to a 3-1 home mark.
