UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The Spider defense came up strong in a hotly contested 1-0 Richmond victory over A-10 foe Saint Joseph's on Sunday afternoon at Crenshaw Field.
Richmond (7-6, 4-0) maintained its spot as the top team in the conference with a crucial stand against a tough Saint Joseph's (5-7, 3-2) squad. UR completed a weekend sweep against A-10 teams with two consecutive shutouts, giving Richmond a 9-1 scoring margin in four conference games.
“We knew today was going to be tough,” head coach Gina Lucido said. “Saint Joseph's can score goals and defend, and it was just a test to see who wanted to be at the top of the conference today. We made a great defensive effort and I was glad about the team's consistency. We needed to be a team of excellence in all areas of the field and we did that in back-to-back games this weekend.”
UR goalkeeper Emily Braunewell pitched her shutout of the season, bringing her goals-allowed average to just 2.20. The Spider defensive front was impressive in only allowing two shots, despite constant pressure from the Hawks.
UR jumped on the scoreboard first with a goal from team leader Kelly Quinn in the first half. Quinn made a deflection off a pass from Megan Miller for the eventual game-winner. Quinn leads the team with six goals on the season off just eight shots for an impressive .750 shot percentage.
The Hawks had an opportunity to tie with a penalty corner at the end of the first half, but Spider defenders swarmed the ball and a last-ditch effort was blocked at point blank range.
Despite controlling much of the time of possession in the second half, Saint Joseph's did not get off an official shot as Richmond's defense forced steals and offensive fouls at the back line.
The Spiders will face another tough A-10 test next Friday with a trip to second-place Davidson. Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m.
