BOONE, N.C. – Richmond field hockey recorded its fifth shutout of the season, defeating Appalachian State out of conference with a 3-0 win.
The Spiders (8-7) have not allowed a goal in regulation time in four straight games, and went out of conference to get a win over the Mountaineers (4-10).
Richmond saw goals from three different players with Katrina Balatgek leading the way with a goal and an assist.
Junior Kelly Quinn scored the game's first goal and the eventual game-winner just 29 seconds into the contest. It came off a cross from Balatgek that Quinn redirected to the back of the net. It marked Quinn's team-best seventh goal of the season on just 11 total shots.
"Quinn and Balatgek started off our strong attack in combining for a goal in under a minute of play," head coach Gina Lucido said. "Our ability to maintain constant pressure in the attacking third never wavered through the 70 minutes of play. Avery Safford finished a strong weekend of impact play making a huge defensive save to keep the Mountaineers off the board."
Balatgek found the goal herself on a cross from Avery Safford at the beginning of the second half. UR then put the game away with a goal off a penalty corner scored by Taylor Dietrick with assists from Safford and Nealy Henderson.
Richmond goalkeeper Amanda Hoyt made one save as the Spiders allowed just two shots on goal. Richmond outshot Appalachian State, 18-4.
Richmond returns to conference play next weekend with Saint Francis coming to town on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. UR will then host Boston College on Sunday at noon.
