Richmond Faces Tough Test At No. 4 Virginia
10/04/2015 | Field Hockey
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Richmond Spiders played their sixth ranked team on Sunday, falling 4-1 to the fourth-ranked Virginia Cavaliers on the road.
UVA (9-2) took 33 shots, including 24 on goal, with four goals coming from four different players.
Richmond (5-6) made two defensive saves and freshman goalkeeper Emily Braunewell set a new career mark with 18 saves in the game. It marked the most shots and most saves that Richmond has faced this season. Braunewell's 18 saves tied for the most saves in a game by any player in the Atlantic 10 this season.
“I thought that the program had some tangible winning moments despite a disappointing outcome,” head coach Gina Lucido said. “The defensive corner unit of Kasey Gilbride, Amy Cooke, Megan Miller, Allison Haas and Emily Braunewell braved an onslaught of pressure and came out standing tall. Braunewell never lost focus against UVA's skilled attack and showed tremendous poise under pressure.”
The Spiders scored the first goal of the game, an unassisted goal from freshman Emily Bowe in the 25th minute of the first half.
The Cavaliers came back with consecutive goals before halftime, including one off a penalty corner, that gave UVA a 2-1 lead at halftime.
The high-octane Virginia side continued to be aggressive against the Spider defense in the second half, putting on 18 shots as the Spiders made 11 more saves. Two UVA goals came from loose balls in front of the goal to make the final margin of 4-1.
Richmond will return to conference play next weekend with home games on Friday and Sunday. La Salle comes to town on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m., followed by Saint Joseph's on Sunday at noon. At 2-0, the Spiders are currently in first place in the Atlantic 10.
