Spiders Shut Out La Salle, 5-0, In Conference Win

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond field hockey maintained their first-place position in the conference race with a 5-0 shutout of La Salle at Crenshaw Field on Friday afternoon.
Eight different players tallied points with five different goal-scorers on the Richmond offensive end. The Spiders controlled the game, outshooting the Explorers 21-3 and holding a 10-1 edge in penalty corners. Richmond controlled the time of possession, only allowing La Salle to get off one shot on goal. UR's five goals marked a new single-game high for this season.
“It was really great today to watch the team put into place great connecting play on attack, good defensive effort and good press. All the variables came together,” head coach Gina Lucido said. “We've really been challenged in our schedule this year. The mental resilience that we've been building really came out today. For the most part, it was a great game of hockey and execution from start to finish. We had eight different people that put points on the board today and that was a great team effort.”
Taylor Deitrick opened the scoring in the first half with a wide-open strike from the top of the circle off a pass from Emma Johansson.
Just three minutes later, Deitrick pushed a pass forward to a Kimberly Sportack who was racing away from the closest La Salle player past midfield. Sportack gathered the ball and calmly put it past the charging Explorer goalie for a 2-0 Richmond lead.
The Explorers held the door shut for the first 10 minutes of the second half, despite UR's consistent attack. Until the team's leading goal scorer, Kelly Quinn, got into the action. She gathered a feed from Megan Miller right in front of the net and put it in for her team-best fifth goal of the season.
Four minutes later, Avery Safford sent a hard cross through the circle that Johansson was able to deflect to the back corner of the goal for a 4-0 Spider lead. Sophomore Jessica Bishop put the finishing touches on the win with a deflection into the goal off a pass from Thalia Williamson.
Spider goalkeeper Amanda Hoyt picked up her first shutout of the season, making one save on the three shots La Salle got off.
The Spiders have now outscored Atlantic 10 opponents, 8-1, in three games.
Richmond continues A-10 play at home on Sunday, facing Saint Joseph's at noon. Video
