WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The University of Richmond Spiders track and field team had a pair of record-setting performances at the Monmouth Invitational on Saturday.
The Spiders placed third out of 13 teams at the Invitational with 117 points. Penn won the invite with 155 points, while host Monmouth placed second.
"The women have been working hard all season preparing for the Atlantic 10 championships next weekend in Rhode Island,” head coach Lori Taylor said. “They've each been taking care of business in order to bring their best forward for the team. Today was a great example how their hard work is paying off. The upperclassmen are showing leadership as they lead the team by example with their performances and competitive efforts. Today we had three individual winners - Taylor Clevinger (1000M), Alyson McGonigle (800M), Janel Francis (LJ) and the 4x400 Relay (Fajuyigbe, Clevinger, McGonigle, Gregory). Additionally, we had several competitive top 3 finishes, along with many personal bests."
Clevinger ran a 2:52.05 for first place in the 1000, while fellow Spider Marisa Ruskan took second in 2:54.01. With these times, both women shattered the previous 1000 meter record (3:04.27) at Monmouth's Multi-purpose Athletic Center.
Clevinger also had a big day with the 4x400 team, where she and Deborah Fajuyigbe, Alyson McGonigle, and Jade Gregory ran for 3:54.16. This group also broke the facility record, a time of 3:56.96 previously held by Wagner.
Janel Francis set yet another PR in the long jump, for a distance of 5.81 meters. She also placed fifth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.83 seconds.
Fajuyigbe won the 200 meters with a time of 25.46. Jade Gregory also ran the event, and placed sixth.
At mid-distance, Alyson McGonigle took first in the 800 meters with a time of 2:13.37. She was closely followed by Haley Preschutti in fifth, Kaeyln Heinicke in seventh and Stephanie Hughes in ninth.
The distance team saw great success on the day, starting with Amanda Corbosiero taking the top spot in the mile at 5:07.54. Courtney Thompson and Kelly Bailey finished second and fourth respectively in the event.
Tara Hanley also had a top performance on the day, as she was the top collegian in the 5k at 17:59.77. Teammate Rachel Bringewatt trailed her for second place.
Freshman Liz Montague also saw success on the day in the triple jump, where her 11.62 meters earned her a second place finish.
The Richmond Spiders track and field team will conclude the indoor season at the Atlantic 10 Indoor Track and Field Championships next weekend in Kingston, R.I.
