Brown's Grand Slam Leads Spiders Over Lafayette
03/01/2015 | Baseball
GOOSE CREEK, S.C. – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team won it's fourth-straight game on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Lafayette Leopards, 8-5, at the Charleston Baseball Academy in Goose Creek, S.C.
With the victory, Richmond improves to 5-3 on the season overall, while Lafayette falls to 1-3 on the year. UR's scheduled game against UMBC on Sunday afternoon was canceled due to weather.
Sophomore DH Kurtis Brown led the charge offensively for the Spiders, going 2-for-4 with a grand slam, a double, five RBI and two runs scored. 1B Doug Kraeger had two hits and a RBI, while C Aaron Newman also had a pair of hits. OF Jansen Fraser had the other RBI on a sacrifice fly.
On the mound, sophomore RHP Robbie Baker (2-0) earned the win after tossing 5.1 innings. Baker allowed five runs, four earned, while striking out five. RHP James Lively tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, while LHP Dylan Stoops struck out three batters in 1.1 innings. RHP Ray Harron induced a game-ending double play to record his first save of the season.
Richmond jumped on the Leopards early, scoring four runs in the top of the first. Kraeger plated the game's first run with a RBI single, while Brown followed with a RBI double down the right-field line. After a passed ball scored another run, Fraser hit a sacrifice fly to right field to cap the scoring for the Spiders in the first.
One inning later, Brown did all the damage for UR with one swing. With two out and the bases loaded, the sophomore blasted his second career grand slam deep over the fence in right-center field, doubling the Richmond lead to 8-0.
Lafayette scored the game's next five runs – four in the second and one in the first – but never threatened once the rain started to come down in the fourth inning.
In a steady rain for the rest of the game, Richmond's bullpen did the job, securing the win for the Spiders.
The Richmond Spiders baseball team will travel south to Davidson, N.C. this coming weekend to play in the Davidson Tournament. The Spiders will face Presbyterian on Friday at 6 p.m.
