Hynes Earns SoCon Weekly Defensive Award
03/24/2015 | Men's Lacrosse
Richmond defender Brendan Hynes (Mahopac, New York) has been named the Southern Conference Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
Hynes powered a Richmond defense that held its last two opponents to a combined 11 goals, including a 17-8 road league win at Jacksonville last Saturday. Hynes heled the Dolphins leading scorer to just two assists as Richmond stayed atop the league standings at 2-0. He picked up a ground ball and forced one of Richmond's seven caused turnovers.
Monday, he collected a pair of ground balls in Richmond's 21-3 home win over NJIT for the team's third two-game win streak of the season.
The Spiders are 6-3 on the year, two games better than the 2014 regular season and equaling last year's total wins in their first year of men's lacrosse.
For the season, Hynes leads the Spiders with 15 caused turnovers, while second only to goalie Benny Pugh (Powhatan, Virginia / Woodberry Forest School) with 23 ground balls.
He has added a goal and an assist on open-field opportunities. He was a Second-Team All-League selection last year, earned a spot on the conference's All-Freshman Team and was a 2015 All-SoCon Preseason selection. He led Richmond in ground balls (78) and caused turnovers (35).
This is the fourth Defensive weekly award won by a Spider, with Pugh taking the first three. Midfielder Mitch Goldberg (Damascus, Maryland) took Richmond's lone Offensive Player of the Week award on February 24.
The Spiders, receiving votes in the USILA poll for the third time this season, will face No. 8 Virginia in Charlottesville this Saturday at 1 p.m. The Spiders and Cavaliers played to a 13-12 thriller last season in the inaugural men's lacrosse game at Richmond.
