UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team clubbed 22 hits en route to a 23-7 thrashing of Cornell at the newly renovated Pitt Field on Tuesday afternoon.
With their fifth-straight victory, Richmond improves to 14-8 on the season overall, while Cornell falls to 6-13 on the year. Tuesday's game marked the first for the team at Pitt Field, which underwent renovations that included installation of a new, state-of-the-art surface, a new fence with padding and new foul poles among other improvements.
“Obviously we swung the bats well today,” Richmond head coach Tracy Woodson said following the game. “It was a great day, sunny, 70 degrees and with the new field we couldn't ask for anything more. The field put gives us a little more excitement, a little more pep in our step. It's great for the program.”
Junior OF Jansen Fraser had a career day for the Spiders, batting 5-for-5 with two home runs, a double, four RBI and four runs scored. Freshman OF Kyle Adams had a pair of hits and drove in six runs, while 3B Matt Dacey hit his team-leading seventh homer of the year.
On the mound, freshman RHP Justin Garcia (2-0) pitched five solid innings to earn his second win of the season. Garcia allowed just three runs while striking out five batters. Out of the bullpen, freshman RHP Sean Collins tossed a perfect ninth inning, striking out one.
After a scoreless first inning, the Spiders jumped all over the Big Red in the bottom of the second, scoring eight times with two outs.
Leading 11-0 after five complete, Richmond scored six runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to seize complete control of the contest.
The Spider offense has been nearly unstoppable during its five-game winning streak. The team has batted 76-for-188 (.404) during the stretch with nine homers, 19 doubles, two triples and 65 RBI. In the five victories, Richmond is averaging 13.2 runs a game.
In the victory over Cornell on Tuesday, 11 Spiders had at least one hit, 11 scored at least one run and nine drove in at least one run.
OF Tanner Stanley continued his hot-streak on Tuesday, going 3-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. 1B Kurtis Brown, C Aaron Newman and 2B Daniel Brumbaugh each drove in two runs in the win.
The Richmond Spiders will put first place in the Atlantic 10 on the line this week when the team heads north to face St. Bonaventure in a three-game series. The set gets underway on Thursday with first pitch slated for 12 p.m.
