Women's Lacrosse Falls In Second Half To JMU
03/07/2015 | Women's Lacrosse
Two goals from freshman Kim Egizi (Westwood, Massachusetts) and a season-high 13 saves from senior goalie Emily Boyce (Middletown, Maryland) kept the Richmond Spiders in their game against No. 15 James Madison, but the Dukes had too much offense in the second half and pulled away late for a 10-5 road win at Robins Stadium.
JMU wins five in a row and improves to 5-1, while Richmond had a two-game win streak snapped and sits at 3-4 on the season.
The temperature never got above 30 degrees for the evening, but the defenses came to play early. Neither team could get a good look at the net in the first six minutes before JMU's Taylor Gress broke through for the first goal of the game.
Richmond responded with a goal less than 97 seconds later, when junior Charlett Stevenson (Darien, Connecticut) scored her ninth of the season to tie the game and Egizi poster her fifth of the year at the 17:45 mark in the first half to give Richmond the lead.
The teams traded goals over the next six minutes until the Dukes scored twice in the final eight minutes to take a 4-3 halftime lead. The halftime stats were virtually even, with the Spiders getting one more shot (12-11) and two fewer fouls (14-12) than the Dukes. The only big advantage of the half fell to JMU, as the Dukes won seven of the eight draws in the period.
Richmond made adjustments to win six of the nine draws in the second half, but the Dukes adjusted their defense after the half and kept UR out of the net in the first 22 minutes of the period, while scoring three more goals to get a 7-3 lead and take the game.
The Spiders got second-half goals from senior Anna Jeszeck (Cortlandt Manor, New York) and Egizi to cut the lead to two goals. It was Egizi's second-straight two-goal game to give her five in her first season at the collegiate level.
The Dukes produced an empty-net goal in the waning minutes and a couple more fast-break opportunities to put the final margin at five.
Boyce took the loss (3-4), despite save total. She stopped several point-blank JMU shots to keep the Spiders in the game and improved her season save percentage to 48.7 after seven games.
JMU goalie Schylar Healy produced 12 saves in the victory (5-1).
Richmond will take off for Spring Break, and a trip to Oregon to face the Ducks. They will spend some time together seeing the sights ahead of their game Sunday, March 15, starting at 3 p.m. Eastern.
