Richmond Sets School Records With 30-2 Win Over Yale
03/07/2015 | Baseball
DAVIDSON, N.C. – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team had a day for the record books on Saturday afternoon, beating the Yale Bulldogs, 30-2, at the Davidson Tournament.
With the victory, Richmond improves to 6-4 on the season, while Yale falls to 0-1 on the year.
Richmond's 30 runs set a school record, breaking the 19-year old previous mark of 28 set against George Washington in 1996. The team also set the school record for most RBI in one game with 27. UR's 22 hits were the most for the team since it had 27 in a victory over La Salle in 2013.
“Obviously it was a tremendous day for our offense,” Richmond head coach Tracy Woodson said following the game. “Many guys had great at-bats and hopefully this is a sign of more things to come. On the mound, Zak Sterling was terrific again and I thought the three freshmen who pitched looked very good.”
On a record day for the offense, nine Richmond batters had at least one hit, 12 had at least one run scored and nine had at least one RBI in the game. OF Tanner Stanley went 3-for-5 with a home run, a double and six RBI, while both 3B Matt Dacey and 1B Doug Kraeger had homers and drove in five runs each.
SS Tyler Beckwith went 4-for-7 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored, while OF Michael Morman had three hits, four runs scored and two RBI. DH Kurtis Brown had two hits, including a three-run homer.
On the mound, LHP Zak Sterling (2-1) had another solid outing for the Spiders, pitching 5.2 innings to earn the victory. Sterling didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning, striking out six batters while surrendering just two runs.
A trio of freshmen made impressive debuts on the mound for the Spiders, with each pitching one perfect inning of relief. RHP Brendan McGuigan struck out three, RHP Justin Garcia struck out two, while RHP Keenan Bartlett struck out the game's final batter to secure the win.
With a 1-0 lead headed to the top of the fifth, the Spiders began their onslaught with 10 runs in the frame. Richmond did most of their damage following an error with two outs, scoring nine times following the Yale miscue. In the inning, Richmond sent 15 batters to the plate, scoring the 10 runs on five hits.
Two innings later, Richmond did even more damage in the top of the seventh, scoring 12 more runs. In the frame, Richmond sent 16 batters to the dish, scoring the dozen runs on nine hits.
The Spiders were impressively disciplined at the plate against the Bulldogs, drawing a season-best 13 walks in the victory. Richmond was also hit by five pitches in the win.
Leading 23-2 after seven complete innings, Richmond tacked on seven more runs in the top of the eighth to set the program record. Freshman Kyle Adams laced a two-run double down the right-field line to tie the mark, while Beckwith set the record with a two-RBI double to left to cap Richmond's scoring.
The Richmond Spiders will conclude the Davidson Tournament with a rematch with Presbyterian on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
