UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond Spiders track and field team competed well at both the James Madison Invitational and the Mt. Sac Relays this weekend.
The majority of the team competed at the JMU Invitational this weekend, while seven members of the squad traveled west to compete in the Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, Calif.
At the James Madison Invitational, Freshman Liz Montague had a terrific meet. She placed seventh in the 100-meter hurdles, in a time of 15.53, and also earned seventh in the 200-meter dash. In her signature event, the triple jump, she achieved a lifetime best and new personal record of 12.01 meters.
The freshmen also dominated the 800 meters, where Haley Preschutti, Stephanie Hughes, Kylie Regan and Courtney Campbell took second, fourth, ninth and 12th respectively. The group also ran as a 4x400 relay team, and earned fourth on the day.
Amber Young placed fifth in the 400-meter hurdles, in a time of 64.22. Sarah Timko earned the Spiders a first place finish on Saturday in the pole vault, reaching 3.20 meters.
Richmond also saw excellent performances in the distance events. The 1500 was run by Marisa Ruskan and Emily Graber, with Ruskan finishing second overall.
In the 3000 meters, Tara Hanley and Rachel Bringewatt earned top marks, and took second and third place respectively. Emma Nowak - who ran her first 3000-meter steeplechase this weekend - took third in the event.
At the Mt. Sac Relays, Junior Jade Gregory began the meet strong for the Spiders, as she earned first overall for collegiate runners, and won both of her sections in the 400 meters.
Alyson McGonigle had a strong finish, as she nearly reached her PR, and achieved a season best 4:26.18 in the 1500. Amanda Corbosiero and Taylor Clevinger also ran the event, and Clevinger too earned a season best of 4:30.41.
Janel Francis claimed seventh in the long jump, achieving a distance of 5.72 meters. A seventh place finish was also achieved by Spider senior Jill Prentice, who ran the 5000 meters in 16:39.64.
The Spiders will be back in action next weekend, when they head to the ever-competitive Penn Relays. The relays will be the last meet before the Atlantic 10 Championships on May 2-3 at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia.
