UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team defeated the Rhode Island Rams, 6-1, at Pitt Field on Sunday afternoon.

With the victory, Richmond improves to 20-13 on the season and to 9-3 in Atlantic 10 play. The Spiders' 9-3 mark in conference play moves them in to a tie for first place in the league play with Saint Louis. With the loss, Rhode Island falls to 15-14-1 on the year and to 8-4 in A-10 play.

LHP Dylan Stoops (3-0) was terrific for the Spiders on Sunday afternoon, pitching eight strong innings to earn the win. Stoops matched his career high with nine strikeouts and allowed just one run on five hits. RHP Ray Harron struck out the side in the ninth inning for Richmond.

Offensively, SS Tyler Beckwith and 1B Doug Kraeger led the way for the Spiders. Beckwith batted 3-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored, while Kraeger went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and a double. OF Michael Morman and C Aaron Newman also drove in runs for UR in the victory.

The Spiders wasted little time taking the lead over Rhode Island on Sunday. Leading off for Richmond, Beckwith blasted a solo homer over the left field fence on the first pitch he saw to give UR a 1-0 lead. Three batters later with a runner on, Kraeger made the Spider lead 3-0 with a two-run shot deep to left.

RBI singles from Morman in the third inning and Newman in the fifth pushed Richmond's lead over the Rams to 5-0 after five complete.

After Rhody cut the Spider advantage to 5-1 with a run in the top of the sixth, Beckwith got the lead back to five runs in the bottom of the eighth with a two-out, RBI single to left field.

Leading 6-1 in the ninth, Rhode Island got the leadoff batter on base, but Harron settled in nicely afterwards, striking out the side to give Richmond a 6-1 win.

The Richmond Spiders will be back in action on Tuesday when the team plays host to in-state rival Norfolk State at Pitt Field. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
