04/05/2015 | Women's Lacrosse
Richmond freshman Kim Egizi (Westwood, Massachusetts) scored the game-tying goal with 1:38 remaining in regulation as the team was serving a penalty, and she assisted on the game-winning goal from senior Bailey Zerr (Denver, Colorado) at the 3:10 mark in overtime as the Spiders won a 6-5 defensive battle over Davidson to move to 3-0 in Atlantic 10 Conference play Saturday evening at Robins Stadium.
Richmond is now 6-6 on the season and in a tie for first in the league. Davidson slides to 3-7 overall and 0-2 in the A-10.
In the game, senior Emily Doyle (Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey) recorded two assists and now sits with 95 for her career, taking over the top spot in Richmond's all-time list.
Egizi scored the first goal of the game inside of two minutes into the opening period on the first Doyle assist, which broke her out of a tie with Mandy Friend (2006-09) for the top spot in the UR record books.
Davidson scored the next two goals and took the lead halfway through the first. The teams played to a three-all tie at the half, after Egizi scored her second goal with 1:12 remaining in the period.
The Wildcats scored the first two goals of the second half and held Richmond scoreless for more than 26 minutes until an Emily Newman (New Albany, Ohio) goal with 4:51 in regulation to pull the game to within one at 5-4.
Egizi led the Spiders with three goals and the assist for four points. She has moved into second place on the team in scoring, with 25 points. She is second this season in assists to Doyle, who has 23. She is also one of just two Spiders to score goals on more than half (15 of 25) of her season shot attempts. Her three goals came on just six shot attempts.
The last time Richmond won an overtime game was Friend's senior season of 2009, in a 14-13 home win over Duquesne. The Spiders have dropped their last three overtime games, including earlier this season at William and Mary.
Senior goalie Emily Boyce (Middletown, Maryland) made six saves in the game, including five big ones in the first half. Her 6-6 record mirrors the team this season.
The Spiders forced 12 turnovers, with three each from Newman and senior midfielder Erin Marie Geoghan (Highland, Maryland).
Davidson goalie Katy Boyle made 10 saves in the overtime loss (3-7). Cristin Molinari had two of the five goals for the game for the Wildcats.
The Spiders will head on the road in conference for the first time this season with a Friday game at George Washington and Sunday contest at George Mason next weekend.
