WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team defeated the No. 6-seeded George Washington Colonials, 4-1, in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament on Wednesday morning.
With the victory, the No. 3-seeded Spiders (28-23) will play the No. 2 Rhode Island Rams on Thursday morning at 10 a.m.
Senior RHP Ryan Cook (8-2) was outstanding for the Spiders on Wednesday, pitching 6.2 stellar innings to earn his eighth win of the season. The senior allowed just one run on five hits while striking out five.
Out of the bullpen, senior RHP James Lively pitched a scoreless inning, while RHP Ray Harron tossed 1.2 innings to earn his ninth save of the year.
OF Michael Morman and OF Jansen Fraser led the Richmond offense on Wednesday, with Morman blasting a two-run homer run and Fraser hitting a solo shot.
Through the first six innings of the game, pitching was dominant for both teams, as Richmond and George Washington combined for just three hits.
In the bottom of the sixth, Richmond jumped on the scoreboard, taking a 2-0 lead over the host Colonials. After a walk to OF Tanner Stanley, the Spiders had a runner on and one out for Morman.
On a 1-1 offering, the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year blasted a two-run homer to center field, his seventh of the season, to give Richmond a 2-0 lead over GW.
After George Washington cut the lead in half with a run in the top of the seventh, the Spiders got the run back in the bottom half. With two outs, Fraser launched a 3-2 pitch deep over the fence in center field, pushing the UR lead back to two runs, 3-1, with his fifth home run of the season.
In the bottom of the eighth, Richmond took advantage of a George Washington miscue to take a three-run lead in to the ninth inning. With Stanley on second base and two outs, 3B Matt Dacey hit a grounder to the GW pitcher, who threw the ball away, allowing the hard-running Stanley to score on the error, pushing the UR lead to 4-1.
In the top of the ninth, George Washington rallied with two outs, bringing the game-tying run to the plate, but Harron induced a groundout to secure the 4-1 victory for the Spiders.
