NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – University of Richmond field hockey newcomer Laetitia Commeyne has been named Atlantic 10 Co-Rookie of the Week, as announced by league officials on Monday afternoon, in recognition of her stellar opening weekend at Crenshaw Field.
"I'm so pleased Laetitia has earned this honor," head coach Gina Lucido said. "There are so many transitions in your first month as a rookie and she has handled them with poise and great spirit. I think she is just starting to get comfortable which is great news for the Spiders."
Commeyne made an immediate impact in her collegiate debut on Friday opposite American when she came off the Richmond bench and scored the first goal of her career. The Spiders trailed the Eagles, 1-0, late in the second half before the Lubeek, Belgium native found the back of the cage to tie the score. Richmond went on to win the game, 2-1, in overtime.
She shares the award this week with La Salle freshman Mackenzie Karcher, a forward, who scored the game-winner in the 53rd minute to lead La Salle to a 2-1 win at city rival Villanova. It was the first career goal for the Maple Shade, N.J., native. Karcher came off the bench to register two shots, including the game-winner.
Richmond completed a perfect opening weekend when it defeated Drexel on Sunday, 2-1, earning head coach Gina Lucido's 100th win in the process. The team will travel to James Madison on Friday (Sept. 4) to take on Iowa on a neutral field looking to start the season with a 3-0 record for the first time since 2004.
