Spiders Drop Tough 13-10 Decision At JMU

HARRISONBURG, Va. – There's no place like home and the University of Richmond women's lacrosse team is looking forward to finally return to Robins Stadium after closing out a four-game road swing with a tough battle at in-state foe James Madison on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman Mia Castagnero had her third four-plus goal of the season, but it wasn't enough as the Spiders dropped a hard-fought 13-10 decision to JMU, who lost a one-goal game to ninth-ranked Penn State on Wednesday.
“We had moments when we played really good lacrosse, but we were inconsistent for too much of today's game,” Head Coach Allison Kwolek said. “We need to be ready from the start and put together a solid 60 minutes of play if we are going to win against quality opponents like JMU.”
Castagnero added to her team-leading goal total with four on the afternoon to push her season total to 21, a number that puts her in the top-10 in the country. Senior Brooke Wilson also had a multi-goal performance, finishing with two goals and an assist on the afternoon.
The Spiders started out quickly winning the draw control and getting on the board just 36 seconds into the game when Wilson found Marissa Brown to give Richmond a 1-0 lead.
JMU responded with five unanswered goals over the next 10 minutes before Castagnero got on the board with her first score of the contest with 17:20 to play in the first.
The Dukes responded by extending their lead to 7-2, but the Spiders closed the half strong, scoring four times in the final 9:05 of the stanza, beginning with the first collegiate goal for freshman Julie Ball.
Richmond came out of the halftime break firing, getting goals from Kim Egizi and Wilson in the first five minutes to get within one at 9-8.
JMU responded once again with four goals of its own to take a 13-8 cushion entering the final 10 minutes to play.
The Spiders would ramp up the pressure, finding the back of the net twice in the final four minutes, but couldn't complete the rally.
“I know the team is eager to get back to work this week and continue to improve our game before we see our next opponent,” Kwolek added.
Richmond finally returns home for the first time in over a month on Wednesday, March 23 when it hosts in-state foe William & Mary. Game time at Robins Stadium is set for 6 p.m.
